Why I Became a Private Chef: Creating Restaurant Level Experiences at Home

There was a point where Scratch Crafted Meals was simply about sharing recipes and my love for cooking from scratch. I loved the comfort of homemade meals, the process of baking bread, and the feeling of gathering around the table with family. But over time, something started to shift.

I realized I wasn’t just passionate about food.

I was passionate about how food makes people feel.

That realization slowly led me into the world of private dining and eventually inspired the creation of Scratch Crafted Dining, a luxury in-home dining experience focused on connection, storytelling, ambiance, and elevated hospitality.

Today, I’m not only creating recipes. I’m creating experiences people remember.

From Home Cook to Private Chef

My journey into becoming a private chef didn’t begin in a restaurant kitchen. It began at home.

Like many people, I started cooking more seriously after investing in tools that made me excited to be in the kitchen. I began making meals from scratch, testing recipes, baking bread, and learning techniques that transformed cooking from a chore into something creative and meaningful.

What started as a hobby eventually became a passion.

Then that passion became a business.

As I continued building Scratch Crafted Meals, I discovered that the moments I loved most weren’t just the dishes themselves, it was watching people gather around the table, slow down, celebrate milestones, and truly enjoy each other’s company through food.

That feeling inspired me to take things further.

What Is a Private Chef Experience?

One thing I’ve learned is that many people hear the words “private chef” and immediately picture something intimidating or overly formal.

In reality, a private chef experience can feel incredibly personal, warm, and comfortable.

When clients book with Scratch Crafted Dining, they’re getting far more than a meal. Every experience is customized from beginning to end. That includes:

Why Dining at Home Feels Different

There’s something special about sharing a beautiful meal in the comfort of your own space.

No crowded restaurant.
No rushing through dinner reservations.
No loud distractions.

Just intentional moments centered around food, conversation, and connection.

Some of my favorite experiences have been watching couples completely relax during a candlelit dinner in their own home or seeing families gather around the table and genuinely slow down for the evening.

Food has a way of bringing people together, but hospitality is what transforms dinner into a memory.

That’s the part I fell in love with most.

Behind the Scenes of Scratch Crafted Dining

What many people don’t see is the amount of preparation that happens before guests ever sit down at the table.

Private dining has pushed me to grow not only as a cook, but as a creator and hospitality professional. I spend time:
  • testing recipes
  • refining plating
  • building menus
  • studying service flow
  • sourcing quality ingredients
  • creating ambiance
  • learning new culinary techniques

Every dinner teaches me something new.

I’ve become deeply passionate about the small details from the candlelight, the textures on the plate, the timing between courses, the storytelling behind a dish, and the feeling guests leave with at the end of the night.

Those details matter to me because they create emotion, not just presentation.

More Than Just Food

One of the biggest lessons becoming a private chef has taught me is that people are often searching for more than a great meal.

They’re searching for connection.

Sometimes life moves so quickly that we forget how meaningful it can be to sit down, unplug, and simply enjoy an experience together. If I can help create even a small moment where people feel celebrated, relaxed, or inspired, then I’ve done my job.

As Scratch Crafted continues to grow, so will the experiences I create.

Alongside private dining, I’ll still be sharing recipes, behind-the-scenes moments, kitchen inspiration, and educational cooking content here on the blog. But now, those recipes come from a new perspective, one shaped by real experiences serving guests and creating memorable dinners in homes across Columbus, Ohio.

This journey has stretched me creatively in ways I never expected, and honestly, I feel like I’m just getting started.
