Southern Style Comfort

There’s something so comforting about a warm slice of cornbread fresh from the oven. It’s simple, familiar, and has a way of bringing everyone to the table. Growing up, cornbread was more than a side — it was a staple. Whether it was Sunday dinner, a holiday feast, or a weeknight meal with family, that golden square of cornbread always made the plate feel complete.

This Southern style buttermilk cornbread is tender, moist, and slightly sweet, baked until the edges are perfectly crisp. And just when you think it can’t get any better, we finish it with a warm honey butter drizzle that melts into every bite. It’s the kind of cornbread that makes people ask for seconds… and the recipe.

Pair it with fried chicken, baked mac and cheese, green beans, and candied yams, and you have the full soul food experience.

🔥 Instructions

1. Preheat & Prep

Preheat oven to 375°F.
Grease an 8x8 baking pan OR heat a buttered cast iron skillet for crisp edges.

2. Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together:
  • Cornmeal
  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Baking powder
  • Baking soda
  • Salt

3. Add the Wet Ingredients

Stir in:
  • Buttermilk
  • Eggs
  • Melted butter

Mix until just combined — don’t overmix.

4. Bake

Pour batter into the prepared pan.
Bake 20–25 minutes or until the top is golden and a toothpick comes out clean.

Let cool for 5–10 minutes before slicing.

5. Make the Honey Butter Drizzle

Whisk together melted butter, honey, and a pinch of salt.
Drizzle over warm cornbread or brush it across the top to soak in.

💡 Tips for the Best Cornbread

⭐ 1. Use real buttermilk

It gives the cornbread its tender, rich texture.

⭐ 2. Don’t overmix

Mix until the batter just comes together — this keeps it soft.

⭐ 3. Try baking in cast iron

You’ll get those classic crispy edges everyone fights over.

⭐ 4. Adjust the sweetness

Use more or less sugar depending on preference. (Southern cornbread styles vary!)

⭐ 5. Serve warm

Cornbread tastes best when it’s still warm with honey butter melting into it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Overbaking (leads to dryness)
  • Skipping the buttermilk (you’ll lose tenderness)
  • Adding marshmallows too early (they’ll burn instead of melt)

Why This Recipe Works

This cornbread is soft, buttery, and just sweet enough — the kind that belongs on a Sunday dinner table. Using buttermilk keeps it tender, baking it in cast iron gives you crisp edges, and finishing with honey butter makes it unforgettable.

It’s simple, nostalgic, and meant to be shared.

Tools Needed

  • Cast iron skillet (8–10 inch recommended)
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups & spoons
  • Silicone spatula or spoon
  • Pastry brush (for honey butter)
