There’s something special about Sunday dinner.

In a world that moves fast, Sunday dinner gives us a reason to slow down, gather around the table, and enjoy a meal together. Whether it's sharing stories from the week, planning for the one ahead, or simply enjoying each other's company, those moments around the dinner table are often the ones we remember most.

At our house, we tend to rotate through many of the same meals throughout the month, so when these, easy BBQ ribs make an appearance, everyone gets excited. My son especially loves anything with barbecue sauce. If there's a dipping sauce involved, chances are he's all in, and BBQ sauce is always at the top of his list.

These easy oven baked BBQ ribs are a welcome break from our normal meal rotation. They're hearty, comforting, and packed with barbecue flavor. Best of all, you don't need a grill or smoker. With a low and slow cooking method, you can make fall off the bone ribs in the oven that the whole family will love.
One of my favorite things about this recipe is the barbecue sauce. Instead of spending money on a long list of ingredients to make a sauce completely from scratch, I start with a bottle of my favorite barbecue sauce and make it my own. A few seasonings, a splash of hot sauce, and a little tweaking to your personal taste creates a sauce that feels homemade without all the extra work.

For Sunday dinner, I like serving these ribs alongside creamy mac and cheese, homemade cornbread, and seasoned green beans. Together they create the perfect comfort-food meal that's guaranteed to have everyone reaching for seconds.

If you're looking for an easy family dinner that delivers big flavor, these oven-baked BBQ ribs are the perfect place to start.

Pantry Staples I Keep on Hand

  • Smoked paprika
  • Brown sugar
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Worcestershire sauce

Ingredients

For the Ribs

  • 2 racks baby back ribs
  • Yellow mustard (binder)
  • 2 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1–2 tbsp brown sugar

BBQ Sauce

  • 1 bottle Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ Sauce (or your favorite brand)
  • Hot sauce, to taste
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Smoked paprika
  • Black pepper

Season until it tastes like your perfect BBQ sauce.

Instructions:

Step 1

Preheat oven to 275°F.

Flip the ribs over and remove the thin membrane from the back of each rack. This step makes a huge difference and helps create more tender, fall-off-the-bone ribs. (Cooking ribs in the oven at a lower temperature allows the connective tissue to break down, creating incredibly tender, juicy ribs.)

Pat dry with paper towels.

Step 2

Coat both sides lightly with yellow mustard.

Don't worry, you won't taste the mustard. It simply helps the seasoning stick.

Step 3

Mix together the salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and brown sugar.

Season both sides generously. Seriously, this is where the flavor comes in. If you need to add more seasoning, than the suggested amount to get this color shown below then please do it. Trust me, you won't regret it!

Step 4

Wrap each rack tightly in heavy-duty foil.

Place on a baking sheet.

Bake for approximately 3 hours, or until the ribs are fork tender.

Step 5

While the ribs bake, mix together your BBQ sauce.

I love starting with a bottle of Sweet Baby Ray's and making it my own with extra seasoning and a little hot sauce. Feel free to use your favorite BBQ sauce or give my favorite a try.

Step 6

Remove the ribs from the foil.

Brush generously with BBQ sauce.

Return to the oven uncovered for 20–30 minutes.

For extra caramelization, broil for 2–4 minutes while watching carefully.

Victoria's Tips

✔ Remove the membrane before seasoning.
✔ Wrap the ribs tightly so they steam while cooking.
✔ Let the ribs rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
✔ Wait until the end to sauce them so the sugars don't burn.
✔ Taste your BBQ sauce before using it. Everyone's spice preference is different, so adjust it until it's perfect for your family.

What to Serve with BBQ Ribs

Complete your Sunday dinner with:

  • Southern Mac and Cheese
  • Homemade Cornbread
  • Garlic Green Beans
  • Candied Yams

Together they make one of our favorite comfort food meals.

Storage

Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.

Freeze for up to 3 months.

Reheating

Wrap ribs in foil and bake at 300°F until warmed through.

Brush with additional BBQ sauce if needed before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you make fall-off-the-bone ribs in the oven?

Removing the membrane from the back of the ribs, seasoning generously, wrapping tightly in foil, and cooking low and slow are the keys to making tender, fall-off-the-bone ribs without a smoker.

Can I use spare ribs?

Absolutely.

Just increase the cooking time by about 30–45 minutes depending on size.

Why use mustard?

It acts as a binder for the seasoning and the flavor cooks away completely.

Can I make these ahead?

Yes!

They're actually even better the next day after the flavors have had time to develop.

Can I make these spicy?

Definitely.

Simply increase the hot sauce in your BBQ mixture or add cayenne pepper to the dry rub.

Hi, I'm Victoria (Tori Lynn)—the chef, recipe developer, and founder of Scratch Crafted Meals. What began as a simple recipe blog has grown into something far greater than I ever imagined. Today, Scratch Crafted Meals is home to homemade recipes, private chef experiences, cooking classes, and Scratch Crafted Bakery, but the heart behind it has never changed.

I believe some of life's best moments happen around the table. Whether I'm creating an elegant multi-course dinner for clients, testing recipes in my own kitchen, or baking alongside my family, my goal is always the same: to help others create meaningful memories through food.

Here you'll find approachable recipes inspired by professional techniques, family traditions, and the belief that homemade doesn't have to be complicated. I love taking restaurant-quality ideas and making them achievable for everyday cooks.

When I'm not developing recipes, you'll find me serving private dining clients throughout Central Ohio, teaching cooking classes, creating content for fellow food lovers, or dreaming up the next recipe to share with our growing community.

Thank you for being here. Whether you've cooked one recipe or a dozen, attended one of my dinners, ordered from the bakery, or simply stopped by to browse, I'm grateful you've found your way to my little corner of the internet. I hope these recipes inspire you to slow down, gather the people you love, and create something delicious together.

With love,
Victoria "Tori Lynn" Darnell
